configuring Telecom Italia ADSL

Yes, I got the "Alice" service from Telecom Italia... works pretty well actually. Fortunately the modem they send does both USB and Ethernet, the latter being very easy to set up in Linux (in a Windows-like way, using a "Wizard" ...).

  • run Applications -> System Tools -> Internet Configuration Wizard
  • select "xDSL connection", click "Forward"
  • provider name: TelecomItalia, username: aliceadsl, password: aliceadsl
  • click Apply

To start the connection, hook everything up, turn on the modem and wait for the ADSL light to blink (about 25 times) and then stay on. In the meantime, start Applications -> System Tools -> Network Device Control.

  • if the network hasn't started yet, select it and click "Activate"
  • next, select "TelecomItalia" and click "Activate". Your link should become active in about 5-10 seconds
